25 Years in Steel: Lessons Learned and Industry Insights

This year marks a significant milestone: 25 years in the steel industry. From joining SolSteel in 2000 to running VH Steels since 2019, I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible customers, dedicated teams, and trusted global suppliers. Along the way, I’ve gained insights that have shaped the way we supply steel across Australia. Here’s a look at some of the lessons learned and key industry takeaways.

1. Relationships Matter

Steel supply is about more than product, it’s about people. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand that strong relationships with customers and suppliers make all the difference. Trusted connections ensure reliability, better problem-solving, and smoother operations when timelines are tight.

2. Quality Can’t Be Compromised

Whether it’s Chrome Bar, Cylinder Tube, or induction-hardened steel, quality is everything. Machinery and hydraulic systems rely on precise tolerances and durable materials. Cutting corners on steel only leads to downtime, costly repairs, and lost trust. We’ve learned that investing in quality suppliers and thorough product checks pays off for everyone.

3. Speed and Flexibility Are Key

Industries move fast, and so must steel suppliers. Over the years, offering cut-to-length services, fast turnaround, and Australia-wide delivery has become essential. Flexibility to handle small orders or urgent requirements has kept us competitive and ensured our customers can rely on us when it matters most.

4. Listen to the Customer

No two businesses have the same needs. Listening carefully to what our customers require — whether it’s specific grades, custom lengths, or scheduling preferences — has been critical to long-term success. Understanding challenges on the ground allows us to provide tailored solutions that actually make a difference.

5. Adaptation and Innovation

The steel industry evolves constantly. From supply chain challenges to new machinery and materials, staying ahead means being adaptable and embracing innovation. Whether it’s using state-of-the-art cutting equipment, implementing online quoting tools, or streamlining logistics, being proactive keeps us competitive and our customers satisfied.

6. Small Details Have Big Impact

Attention to detail, from accurate stock management to correct cut lengths and careful handling, makes a huge difference. Over 25 years, we’ve learned that the small things often separate good suppliers from great ones.

Looking Forward

Reaching 25 years in steel is both humbling and motivating. It’s a reminder that trust, quality, and service matter above all else. At VH Steels, we’re committed to continuing to supply the products and services that keep Australian businesses running efficiently, while building relationships that last for decades.
